GSI3D Research Consortium

The technology of 3D geological modelling is bringing about great changes in the methods of acquiring, storing, processing, visualising and interpreting geological data.

With advances in computing power and graphical technology and the availability of increasingly precise terrain models, it is now possible to envisage a new general concept for surveys, academia and commercial companies which was previously the preserve of specialised modelling teams:

GSI3D, being developed jointly by the BGS and Hans-Georg Sobisch of INSIGHT GmbH, is a methodology and associated software tool for 3D geological modelling which addresses this need. GSI3D is being offered as part of a research consortium membership.

What is the GSI3D consortium?

The GSI3D consortium is an open consortium, based on corporate or individual memberships that enables GSI3D to be used and deployed by geological surveys, government agencies, universities, not-for-profit organisations, commercial companies, individuals and students. As a subscriber to the consortium you will gain access to the software and documentation and also to the community provided by the consortium — the consortium services. It is envisaged that the consortium will act as:

A research-led knowledge pool within which subscribers will
gain access to the constantly improving GSI3D software system

Site-scale 3D model

As a member of the consortium you will receive the modelling software, a user manual and other available technical documentation and access to an e-mail helpdesk. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in sharing experience and best practice with fellow subscribers, and will have access to conferences designed to facilitate discussion and build networks amongst fellow subscribers.

What are the key benefits?

As a member of the consortium you will have the opportunity to share your modelling experiences and collaborate with us and other members on the development of the methodology and the software by providing feedback and suggestions. As part of your subscription you will gain access to ongoing updates to the software and associated documentation, and experienced users will be able to trial pre-release Beta versions of the software as they become available in return for providing feedback. Download a product brochure as PDF.

How much does it cost?

The consortium is operated on a not–for–profit basis, so all income received by BGS will be used to support and run the consortium and to further develop GSI3D on everyone's behalf. By joining the GSI3D consortium you will be directly funding future development of the methodology, the software and the documentation, all of which will be released back to the consortium members. Prices are based on organisation type. GSI3D research consortium pricelist.
